If you have unfiled taxes, you are making a hard situation even harder.
In many cases an easy fix to a simple tax problem can be made worse by something small like not filing
If you are 5 or more years behind in taxes, you MUST know the following before dealing with the IRS:
1. Do NOT attempt to get caught up with taxes on your own.
You may end up making things worse depending on the amount of time that has past. If the tax debt is over 5 years old, make sure to get assistance from a licensed professional
2. Do NOT allow the IRS to do them for you
If the IRS offers to file your taxes for you, be sure to decline. They will not give you the deductions you are entitled to by law and you will end up paying more in the long run. Either do them yourself or have a professional do them for you. They can also be done as a courtesy at no charge in some cases
3. Only sign tax returns AFTER you have reviewed them for accuracy
Any inaccurate information submitted on tax return is the responsibility of the tax payer.
Tax professionals are rarely held accountable as their work is done based on the accuracy of the individual they are representing. It is therefore expected that the taxpayer review all tax documents before signing.
If you are unsure about the quality of your tax returns, they can be reviewed as a courtesy at no charge.
